[...] A Few Thoughts on Natural Learning Like Moonshadows we are going through many changes now. We are rethinking how we teach and learn as a family. We do this at regular intervals. My 12-year-old and I are working hard at developing a collaborative relationship to guide her in her learning. Serendipitously (Is that a word? Even if it isn’t, I like it) other bloggers have been writing about collaborative learning. Many times I have started expressing my thoughts on that subject, in a post, and been side-tracked. (Somehow the train never gets back on the tracks) However, I think that will be a post for another time. [...]

I really struggle with giving up control too - and I struggle with understanding to what degree my kids want to be self-directed in their unschooling adventure, and to what degree they want structure and guidance. It sounds like you are on a good path. Often kids have an intuitive understanding of what they need at a given time. My 12-year-old daughter has been reading a lot too, and not doing much schoolish stuff. But I can see that this is good for her - developmentally and emotionally - right now. There'll be plenty of time for Algebra and Chemistry in a few years. Hope this makes sense. Blessings - S
